Welcome to Sew Much Love Pet Portrait Quilts, created by quilt artist Maria Risener. Maria has combined her love of animals with her love of art and fabric to create her artistic pet portrait quilts. Her work is characterized by her use of vibrant colors and fabrics; she favors batiks as they lend themselves well to her interpretations of the animals she portrays in her unique quilted pieces of art.
Always an animal lover, she now enjoys creating art for other animal lovers and donates a portion of her proceeds to various animal rescue groups. She is devoted to her pets and through the years has shared her heart and home with many of them, of varying breeds and species.
Initially inspired by the patterns of Sharon Malec, Maria now creates custom portraits of animals that have her own unique touch. Each piece is created using both hand and machine techniques, of 100% cotton fabric, including backing, binding, and batting. This work is not silk screened, not painted on fabric, not a photo transfer to fabric, but hand cut and appliquéd pieces of fabric combined to create an artistic patchwork portrait. Approximate size for a finished quilt is 18" x 24". Each pet portrait quilt is made with a sleeve on the back for hanging.

A past winner of Whatcom Humane Society's Woof and Whiskers Award for her work in animal rescue, Maria continues to feels compelled to help animals. Each month a different animal in need from a shelter or rescue organization will be featured here on Sew Much Love Pet Portrait Quilts.
